Arranged over two stories, Ysgol Ffwrnes is a new build, welsh medium, primary school in the Furnace area of Llanelli that was situated on a sloping site with poor ground conditions and flood concerns. It needed to meet the concerns of the community and work within the ecological constraints of the area.

As the first BREEAM “Outstanding” primary school in Wales, the project will be highly energy efficient and make a real difference to the teachers, students and members of the community who use it.
Reciprocal benefits were agreed with the sports clubs surrounding the school, and neighbours’ concerns were considered during construction.
Preserving and enhancing the surrounding woodland and ponds benefits the learning experience for students.
The budget was allocated based on whole-life costs, reducing energy and maintenance costs.
Courtyards, covered classrooms and a roof terrace link to classrooms and the surrounding woodland, with classrooms enjoying good natural daylight, stunning views and a comfortable thermal environment.
A double height hub or ‘heart’ space provides a generous space for impromptu meetings, allowing informal performances and learning to take place.
All initial problems were not only addressed but the solutions positively benefited the final scheme, resulting in a project that everyone could be proud of.
"Melin provided an excellent service throughout the duration of the project and their continued involvement and input helped make 'Outstanding' possible."
