What is an HEA02 BREEAM Indoor Air Quality Plan?
An Indoor Air Quality Plan is a written document that sets out a strategy to encourage a healthy internal environment through the specification of appropriate ventilation, materials and maintenance processes. The BREEAM assessment standards requires a site specific indoor air quality plan has been produced and implemented in accordance with the guidance in GN06.
The overall aim of the plan is to establish and facilitate a process that leads to design, specification and installation decisions that minimise indoor air pollution once a building is occupied.

Why is the Indoor Air Quality Plan critical to BREEAM Compliance?
Under past versions of the BREEAM Assessment, one credit was available for providing a compliant indoor air quality plan, however this is no longer the case under the more recent revisions such as BREEAM 2018, BREEAM V6 and BREEAM V6.1 now require an Indoor Air quality Plan as a pre-requisite for the entirety of the HEA02 section. This means that without this plan being in place no credits can be achieved under the section at all!
As well as achieving credits, concentrating on air quality provides all stakeholders with the peace of mind that everything has been carried out to maximise occupant health and safety.
